Time for a Meeting

I would like to propose a meeting for our group of PLTW teachers. It would be really good to get everyone together so that you can share your experience so far and ask questions of the other people going through the same thing.

Additionally, I would like to plan an event or two for your students at our facility.

I propose meeting on Thursday afternoon October 25th at 1:00 PM at ICC. Please let me know (soon) if you can make it.

Thank you,

Ron

Hello

Hi Everyone,

Thanks Ron for this blog. POE is up and running in DR. We do not have a seperate class this year for I am using POE curriculum in my 9th grade Honors Physical Science class. This curriculum is working out well for the physics portion of the physical science but I am still struggling with the eventual integration of the chemistry and POE. Next year the plan is to offer POE as it own class. The POE class just started the SMET project using Fischertekniks and they are really getting into it. Hope PLTW is going well for everyone else.

Communication from Ron

Hi All!

By now I hope everyone is reading this site. Here is some good info.

First of all, there is a great project opportunity for any of you in the Aluminum Canoe design/build. I used it in my Intro to Engr at the college and Melissa & Ed are using it right now in their 9th grade POE at GRHS. Here is the assignment:

Given one pack of lath (48 pieces), 1 roll of duct tape, 100 sq feet of aluminum foil, and hot glue, make a canoe to be raced.

This project will take about 1.5 weeks of class time, but it is awesome for building student enthusiasm and is quite visible to our schools and communities. To see some of the canoes, go to my personal blog: thebottomlineru.blogspot.com and scroll down to last week.

I have money to help you buy supplies if you like.

Secondly, here is an offer: Last week our 75 first year students put together 40 different presentations (8-12 minutes) on "The 20 greatest engineering achievements". Some of these are really good. If you would like us to put together a group of 4 (~50 minutes) of these and have the students come to your class to give the presentations, just let me know and we will set it up.

Finally, I hope to encourage you to keep up with this site. As you learned in your training, the most effective thing we can teach our students is how to perform well in a group -- it leads to the best results. Well, the way I see it, we are a group searching for good results.

Hello Ron
Things seem to be going ok. curriculum seems to be pretty good so far. We are in need of a plotter Does any one have any suggestions! i was looking at a hp 5500 ???? Thad

Welcome to the Itasca Area PLTW site!

Greetings!

I am establishing this site as a common place for communication for the PLTW teachers at Nashwauk-Keewatin, Greenway, Grand Rapids, and Deer River. I am hoping this is a place we can share information, ask for help, share successes, and most importantly stay connected. As teachers in small departments we often find ourselves isolated. When starting a brand new curriculum we can have a lot of unanswered questions. Through PLTW we are teaching our students the power of working together in teams. Well here is our team. Let's model effective groupwork. Below is a list of our group. Here are my requests:

1. Visit this site regularly
2. Contribute to the site regularly
3. Make an initial comment to let us know you are here

I am giving everybody publisher rights. Just log in and post to the discussion board. Post pictures, questions, comments, etc.

I will be monitoring the site daily and encouraging everyone to take part.

Thank you!

Ron Ulseth
